Acupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine.
It is a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) —
believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into
specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow
will re-balance.
In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate
nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation helps release the
bodys natural opioids.
Veronika Leskova, is a Traditional Chinese Acupuncturist practising in Sligo town for
several years. She grew up in a family with strong holistic values. From her early teens she
was introduced to herbal supplements based on the 5 elements of acupuncture principles and
her all family are still using them today. Veronika believes her family life changed for the
better since they were able to help themselves and did not need many doctor visits.

In 2013 she started Reiki 1 and in 2016 she became a Reiki master.
On her life journey, she tried acupuncture for pain relief and was surprised how relaxed it
made her feel and as a pain relief solution it was excellent. After regular visits over the years,
she noticed how her health and emotional well-being was improving.
She wished others could try and help themselves with natural solutions with no side effects
from painkillers or other Western medicines. This thinking motivated Veronika to start her
study with the Acupuncture Foundation Ireland in Marino College of Further Education in
2017 and she obtained a diploma in 2020.
In my opinion , Veronika states ‘the body is either in harmony or disharmony" and in her
practice she looks for the reason for its imbalance and tries to bring the body back to its
natural strength and vitality.
Veronika takes her clients medical background and their body as a whole into consideration
with any possible treatment specifically tailored for each individual.
She does so using fine acupuncture needles, cupping, magnetic heat lamp,
moxa, tuina massage and diet advice to restore balance in the body.
Over the years her kids got treated with acupuncture often for pain from headaches, stomach
problems and other ailments. These disappeared in moments.
In her practice she treats children, teenagers and adults alike. Acupuncture, if they are brave
to try it or cupping which children love, followedby gentle massage over selected
acupuncture points. Diet advice if needed.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through the skin at strategic points on
your body. Many feels tingling going up and down the body, or like a quick electric shock or
bit of pain what you will not feel after little while as your body starts to relax.
Magnetic heat lamps relax your muscles as does cupping. Cupping is also believed to release
toxins from the body, improve circulation and relieve pain. The vacuum-like suction from the
cups causes micro-trauma to applied areas and that promotes healing. Tuina massage
stimulates the flow of qi and similar to acupuncture promotes balance and harmony in the
body. It targets specific acupoints, but finger pressure is used instead of the needles.

The benefits of acupuncture are sometimes difficult to measure, but many people find it
helpful to control a variety of painful conditions. The World Health Organisation (WHO)
states acupuncture is used mainly to relieve discomfort associated with a variety of diseases
and conditions, including:
Low Back Pain
Neck Pain
Tennis Elbow
Knee Pain
Peri-arthritis of the shoulder
Sprains
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Breech Birth Presentation
Morning Sickness
Stroke
Allergic Rhinitis
Hay Fever
Depression
Chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting
Fibromyalgia
Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines
and many more…
‘People often don’t feel the needles being inserted at all" Veronika says. ‘Some people feel
relaxed, and others feel energized after an acupuncture treatment but overall, many people
find it is helpful as a means to help with a variety of painful conditions, chronic pain, sleep
disorders and many more.”
Pain is an unpleasant sensation that can limit a person’s capabilities and abilities to follow a
daily routine. Acupuncture has few side effects, so it is worth a try if you’re having trouble
controlling pain with more conventional methods in my opinion.
